Day 05 - Auckland - Hot Water Beach
On the way from Auckland to Hot water beach we made a stop at Cathedral Cove Beach, which is now a natural park, i.e. no fishing allowed.
Once there, we got ready for our next activity:
That's right Kayaking!
You'll have to bear with me as this time I tried to overcome one of the limitations my camera has i.e. it's not submergible. In order to overcome this, I bought something that could be described as a raincoat for the camera... unfortunately, sometimes this leaves a print on the photograph... so if you see something weird on the pictures it's that gadget playing out, it's not me trying to be artistic.
My Kayaking buddy Oscar
Yours trully
We left the beach were the bus left us and we all rowed towards Cathedral Cove Beach
Then we walked about the beach while we enjoyed a fresh cup of tea...or coffee depending on your preference.
Natural showers
Then back on the kayak, we went to an nearby island and from there back to the beach from where we started.
It took us about 3 hours...and a lot of rowing...
After all the rowing, the bus drove us to our destination: Hot Water Beach... the name is not random as it happens in many places.
There was a beach with a small section where, if you dig a hole, hot water comes out of it, hence Hot Water Beach, for once an appropriate name :-). Now, this water is too hot to enjoy but if you dig the hole while the tide is receding, the hot water gets mixed up with the cool water from the sea and then...you can enjoy it.
As it happens high tide would happen at 11 pm and we were dropped off at a very nice camping where we had a cabin with two rooms of 4 people each
Then with everyone wondering what to do...and nobody knowing anybody, some of us were sitting on a table, someone asked if anyone knew any games and that's how I introduced them all to the wonders of "werewolf" :-)
Two and a half hours later... we were still playing!
and we were all best friends :-)
From left to right: Rose (UK), Lucy (UK), Eli (Australia), Sabrina (Switzerland), Maria (sorry about the spelling) (Holland), Charlotte (USA), Will (UK), Oscar (Sweden), Karl (Germany)
The time for the hide tide was getting closer
We grabbed a spade and we made our way to the beach... in the dark... never forget to pack a torch in your rucksack... I always think I'll never use it but I always end up using it...
Once we got there... we started digging...
When we made it back to the cabin I had one foot and one hand burnt... not to mention I could barely move my arms from the kayaking and then from all the digging... but it was all good fun! :-)
